January 18, 1903. Seated at the Café de Madrid, boulevard Montmartre in Paris, Henri Desgrange, Victor Goddet and Géo Lefèvre are looking for an idea to increase the notoriety of their sports newspaper, L'Auto, ancestor of L'Equipe. The next day, the daily announces on its front page the creation of the biggest cycling race ever organized. On July 1 of that same year, sixty runners were on the starting line. The Tour de France has just been born. 2013 marks the hundredth edition of the Grande Boucle, an event followed all over the world which brings spectators to wonderful moments. Tragic too, sometimes. It is these strong moments, punctuated with anecdotes and richly illustrated, which are gathered in this album. Let yourself be won over by nostalgia or admiration and revisit each Tour one by one, this legendary race which returns in summer as the most beautiful fruit of our summers.
Gérard Schaller joined the newspaper L'Equipe in 1982, where he held the positions of major reporter, then deputy editor. On behalf of the Publishing department, in 2011 he produced a collection of 45 booklets: L'Equipe tells the great story of the Tour de France.
